Brief :

In the highland shadows of western North Carolina, the quiet community of Runion is jolted awake when a missing local man is discovered dead in an isolated highland meadow, placed side by side with an unknown woman. Before the community can make sense of the tragic scene, another man and woman vanish without a trace, and a female deputy is found brutally murdered.

Convinced that a ruthless predator is stalking their mountains, Gabriel Tanner, the dedicated editor of Runion’s weekly newspaper, joins forces with Plumer Reeves, an eccentric and reclusive local hawkshaw hired by the first victim’s niece. Along with two extraordinary young women, Ariel Anderson from the Avalon enclave and Livvy Goforth of Lonesome Mountain, the group sets out on a perilous hunt across misty trails, ancient hollows, and local legends to expose and stop the killer before another life is taken.

My opinion :

Avalon Moon is a masterclass in atmospheric suspense, delivering a flawless blend of Southern Gothic tension, rich Appalachian folklore, and high-stakes serial killer investigation. From the eerie opening discovery of two corpses staged together in a mountain clearing, the novel grips you immediately and never lets go.

What makes this book extraordinary is its vivid ensemble of characters and multi-layered perspective. Gabriel Tanner provides a grounded, sharp journalistic eye, while Plumer Reeves brings a captivating, unconventional grit to the investigation. The additions of Ariel Anderson and Livvy Goforth inject fearless instinct and local folk wisdom into the hunt, ensuring that every interaction crackles with authenticity, sharp dialogue, and deep emotional resonance.

The true star of the story, however, is the setting itself. The Blue Ridge wilderness feels ancient, shadowy, and alive with isolation and folklore. The author expertly balances a simmering, slow-burn tension with intense, heart-pounding reveals, keeping you second-guessing the motives of every figure who emerges from the mountain mist. The pacing builds to a breathtaking climax that delivers genuine shock and total narrative payoff.

Ultimately, Avalon Moon is an absolute triumph of rural noir that mystery and thriller fans will find impossible to put down. It earns an enthusiastic five stars and a permanent place on your must-read shelf.
