Write your guide to setting healthy boundaries in relationships.
When you are in a relationship, it is vital to remember that you and your partner are two completely different people with your own thoughts and choices. Even though you love being together, you still need to learn how to coexist peacefully. Setting healthy boundaries is the best way to make sure you both respect each other’s personal space without trying to control one another.
Here is an easy guide to making boundaries work for you:
- Speak up about your limits: Tell your partner clearly what you need and what you cannot handle. This keeps you from feeling exhausted or bitter. First, you have to look inside and know what makes you feel comfortable.
- Protect your energy: You cannot carry all of your partner’s stress or feel their emotions for them. Notice the specific moments that leave you feeling trapped or unappreciated, and protect your peace.
- Get used to a little awkwardness: When you start setting new rules, your partner might feel hurt or confused at first. That is normal, but taking care of your own mind is never a selfish thing to do.
- Talk about yourself, not them: When you need a break, explain how the situation makes you feel instead of blaming the other person.
- Example: “I feel really distracted when I get personal phone calls during my busy work hours, so I need us to wait until the evening to chat.”
