Brief :
Bel has spent her entire life overshadowed by the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. Sixteen years ago, Rachel Price vanished without a trace, leaving young Bel as the sole witness yet with no memory of the event. Rachel has long been presumed dead, and Bel desperately wishes everyone would move on. But when the Price family agrees to participate in a true crime documentary, the case is thrust back into the spotlight. All Bel wants is for the filming to be over so life can return to normal. Then, the unthinkable happens: Rachel Price returns, shattering any hope of normalcy. Rachel’s account of what happened is astonishing, so astonishing that Bel questions its truth. If Rachel is lying, where has she been all these years? And more importantly could she be dangerous?
My opinion :
This was an incredibly gripping story that kept me turning the pages. Author Holly Jackson, renowned for her “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” series, has truly outdone herself with this standalone novel. The premise of this book is undeniably captivating, with its twists being both gripping and unexpected. It evokes strong emotions and provokes deep thought throughout. Bel is a uniquely crafted character, though I found it difficult to fully connect with her. Despite this, the character was well written, and overall, I enjoyed the book immensely. It was an absolute page turner.
